Maine has close to 3,500 miles of coastline; as such, the Atlantic plays an important part of many locals’ lives. At our latest Elite Event in Portland, ME the new and one-of-a-kind Heritage Seaweed invited Yelp Maine to learn more about sugar kelp, bladderwrack, dulse, laver, Irish moss, sea lettuce, and the many other edible seaweeds found right off our coast. Not only did we enjoy a touch tank full of the stuff and an intense trivia contest about it, we also consumed seaweed via beer, hard cider, gin cocktails, salsa, and – of course! – ice cream. We learned that most of the world’s oxygen comes from seaweed, that seaweed forms the basis for the entire food chain, and that seaweed is rich in vitamins and minerals (many of our merYelpers enjoyed trying out locally made bath, body, and beauty items made from seaweed as well). What a way to celebrate the end of the summer season, so be sure to kelp yourself to the reviews and photos!
