#YelpHelps is a monthly volunteerism series where Yelpers, their friends, and family get to explore Maine via its amazing non-profits! As the weather began to warm up, we started our spring season of community service at the Fay Garman House – an independent living facility for persons 62 years or older located on Peaks Island, a short ferry ride from Portland – helping residents set-up their planters for another year of gardening. Afterwards we were treated to some five star homemade mac and cheese, sloppy joes, and an array of cookies. Check out reviews and photos here!Rachel D: “The Fay Farman House is such a beautiful spot on Peaks Island! I was so happy to be lucky enough to volunteer here through Yelp. I’ve been telling everyone about the Fay Garman House and other housing facilities throughout the state that are related to this location.”
In May we visited Mona Jerome at Ever After Mustang Rescue where she cares for, rehabilitates, and re-homes mustangs. Mona always puts us to work, and this year she had us digging eight foot deep holes for her new fence. A pizza party and snuggles with the animals afterwards made for an amazing Saturday of giving back – Yelpers took lots of photos of the horses, so be sure to take a look!
Gail T: “Ever After Mustang Rescue has to be one of the most satisfying Yelp Helps that I have worked. Mona is so dedicated and humble. I wouldn’t normally jump at the chance to dig 3 foot holes….but for the love of horses, I’d do this all over again.”
We ended our spring session of #YelpHelps at SailMaine – an NPO that supports sailing in Maine at the community level. To help them prepare for their annual open house, Yelpers got the chance to spend a sunny afternoon on tiny sailboats cleaning them up for show the next day! Check it out!
Amanda B: “What a perfect day by the ocean! I had never heard of SailMaine prior to our day volunteering with them, but what a cool nonprofit! I had no idea that Maine had almost 3,500 miles of coastline. With that in mind, I DO feel like we ALL should have the opportunity to get to know our way around a sail boat. Sail Maine gives the opportunity to us. They even gave us Yelpers a chance to get out on the water, to a moored sailboat, to scrub away at winter’s leftover debris.”
Yelp in Maine knows it feels good to do good, and volunteering is something we love coming together to do! We invite anyone and everyone to join us – all you have to do is head over to our Calendar for more information about where we’ll be throughout the summer!
