A little bit of cold weather couldn't stop Kansas Citians from celebrating the season in true Yelp Style! Over 200 guests braved the elements and came to Knuckleheads for Yelp's Honkytonk Holiday Bazaar! Literally on the other side of the tracks, guests enjoyed food, drink and shopping, all to the sounds of passing trains and local rockabilly superstars Miss Major and her Minor Moodswings. And thanks to the guests' generous donations, we raised $1000 in cash and over $2000 worth of new toys, all for The Children's Place!
Under the tents provided by Accent Special Event Rental was an open-air market that Katherine D said transported her to "the Christmas Markets of Europe, where you can purchase all manner of crafty things, foodstuffs, and gifts." Representing KC's thriving artisan and local business scene were Mills Record Company, Mash Handmade, BIKLOPS, Haberdash: Wit + Style, Papillon Kate, Wood + Salt, Owl & Mouse, Two Tone Press, Lost & Found Jewelry, Nice Save, DesignbyMindy, Our Sassy Pantry, Nairobi House, Santeé Massage, Bobby Boot Leggers, Boulevard Dry Goods and more!
The local brewing and distilling communities kept everybody happy everybody as they shopped up a thirst. Hometown heroes Boulevard Brewing Company provided their signature Wheat and Pale Ale brews, while Springfield's Mother's Brewing Company served up their brown ale, Three Blind Mice. Sway Vodka concocted a delicious holiday punch that Daniel K called "Fruity Pebbles with a little bam-bam," while SD Strong served up their Strong Breeze, complete with fresh rosemary! And Dark Horse Distillery kept everybody toasty with warm with their bourbon-spiked cider and hot buttered rye!
Keeping a hungry Yelper's belly full is no easy task, but two fantastic venues stepped up to the plate. Chickhoovenswine kept everybody happy with plates of their award-winning rib tips and burnt ends that Courtney L declared "perfect and tender"! And Providence New American Kitchen wowed Yelpers with a delicious smoked salmon appetizer, while spreading the word about their awesome Christmas Eve and Christmas prix fixe menues!
Of course, if there's a party and nobody take pictures, did it really happen? We weren't about to find out! Guests were first greeted by the Selfie Station. Hilarious prop-filled pics taken with your own phone? That was a concept that Logan Locke B says "induced tons and tons of laughter" among her friends. For a more professional product, Framelss Photograhy snapped some seriously silly shots, then photoshopped in hilarious holiday backgrounds. And of course, we have to thank the evening's roaming photographer Chris Mullins, who made sure to capture the action on stage, behind booths and under the heat lamps!
As the year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to thank all of the vendors that made not only The Honkytonk Holiday Bazaar a success, but also all of the great Yelpy gatherings of 2013. Whether we're dishing on new restaurants, scoping out shops or raising funds for a great cause, I always enjoy my time with KC's Yelp Community. And keep your eyes peeled in 2014, because the fun's just going to get bigger and better!
