When it comes to shopping local, Yelpers don't mess around. Every year, Yelp challenges communities around the globe to shop local for the holidays, keeping their hard-earned dough close to home and supporting the small businesses that color our local landscape. And to help make shopping local even easier for Bay Area shoppers, Yelp East Bay hosted it's 2nd Annual Nifty Under $50 Holiday Market on Sunday Dec 1st at the historic Hotel Shattuck Plaza in downtown Berkeley, creating a one-stop shopping mart for all things local, handmade, and uber-giftable.
With over 50 local designers, indie artists, and purveyors of gourmet giftables to peruse, leaving empty-handed was not an option. Grace C shares, "From start to end, I was impressed by the variety & quality of the vendors ranging from vintage clothes & scarves to colorful toddler clothes & headbands to petrified wood carvings to handmade jewelry to greeting cards to kid's room decorations–and more!" Gift list…checked!
To reward local shoppers, Yelp offered the Local Love Lounge, complete with cocktails from Joia All-Natural Soda, cider + beer combos from TW Pitcher's Snakebite, and mulled wine from Spicy Vines. Festive food sponsors offered chocolate-covered Pretzel Crisps, hazelnut-filled Baci chocolates, seasonal popcorn from Peter's Kettle Corn, organic snack bars from KIND, and a cheese tower from Cypress Grove Chevre. Local makeup artist Prettyologie and hair designer Intertwine offered complimentary updo's and makeup touch-ups, while Snap Yourself Photobooth captured the memories. All the while, the Rusty Stings Express jammed in the courtyard, keeping shopper's toes tapping. "Thank you Yelp team for this nifty event!" Mercy D exclaims, "It has definitely kick started my holiday shopping!"
When the sun went down, the cookies turned into crumbs, and the Yelp totes were filled will nifty finds, it was time to wrap-up. Emmalouise B summed up the afternoon saying "There's not much that can beat an afternoon hanging out with fellow Yelpers and shopping the small local businesses." Or as Maggie W puts it: "Three words for Nifty Sunday: love, love, LOVE!"
Happy gifting, Yelp elves!
