Sacramento’s Elite Geeks Let Their Freak Flags Fly!

elite nerds were out in full force last Saturday for a massively
memorable “Yelp Freaks & Geeks” Elite event at Hacker Lab. Our guests are apparently
dweebs at heart, as most had little trouble dressing up (or down) to fit the
role. With a seemingly endless supply of beer, wine, tequila and pizza, this
was one geek party the jocks only wish they were invited to

The whole shebang took place at Hacker Lab, a
self-described "tech-hacking and knowledge sharing space" where entrepreneurs
can rent offices and proudly show off their nerdy colors
. The spacious setting was highlighted by an expert lighting
scheme from Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, a whiteboard wall for guest
graffiti, and a large wall screen and lounge chairs where elites could play any
number of throwback Atari games from Pitfall to Pong!

Like any horribly good
office party, it all comes down to the booze
. Kona Brewing Co. donated a
generous supply of Kona Longboard Lager, Firerock Pale Ale, Big Wave Golden
, and their Aloha Series, which Ida H describes as “truly unique and
distinctly different, all hand crafted, based in Hawaii, and all with the proud
distinction of remaining environmentally friendly.” Donovan H’s “personal
favorite” libation came from Tanteo Tequila, who featured their organic,
jalapeno-infused tequilas. “It was a perfect mix with the fruit punch they were
offering.” And let’s not forget the winos, who all had their fill of Cabernet
Sauvignon from Robert Mondavi.

After snorting over the chemical composition of their libations, our resident
freaks turned to the plethora of pizza pies
from Uncle Vito’s Slice of NY. “I came to the
event with a semi-full stomach yet still found myself snatching up a slice of pizza every time I went for a Kona refill,” admits Cindy S. “The pizza and beer complimented each other well. I liked the pizza, so it's more than likely I'll stop in and try some of Uncle
Vito's other selections soon!”

The night capped off with a contest for best nerd costume of the night measured
by audience applause. Winner Jackie F took home a $50 gift certificate to The
Melting Pot
courtesy of Yelp’s partnership with Dine Downtown. Second place
winner Richard W scored Sacramento Kings tickets, and third place winner Joe K
received a Yelp beer pint glass. By far the highlight of our awards ceremony
was the 2012 Yelper of the Year award
for beloved elite Ida H! She received
over 60 votes out of close to 300 and won a $50 gift certificate to The Firehouse Restaurant,
also courtesy of Dine Downtown!

A special nerd nod to Sylvester Vang for documenting the event in some amazing
now on Flickr, and to Eric and Gina of Hacker Lab for allowing us to use
their space.
